To develop man power in engineering fields, Taita Taveta University College has equipped the engineering workshop with machines and tools that students need for basic training in workshop processes together with elements of measuring and gauging.Kenya is undergoing industrial change and demand for engineers has already outstripped the supplyThat is why Universities could soon come under pressure to limit coursesthat do not connect with the country’s development vision. This calls for some strict adjustments in order to instill focus to relevance.
We in the department of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering (MMPE) have tried to ensure that our engineering students get the opportunity to participate in the process of building up Taita Taveta University College. For instance, they have participated in the fabrication of beds for their hostels, table for the dining hall and benches for the garden seats.
Unlike in many institutions, where creativity and innovation appears stuck in documents, here in TTUC, promotion and sustainability of the two is no longer elusive. We believe that each one of us has an important role to play in changing the widely held perception that graduate engineers from out local Universities are weak when challenged to work using their own hands.
Although some of the machines bought were not new, they are perfectly serving the purpose. When being purchased, there was fear that always asked the question; what if they do not work? At that point many would be frozen in the prison of fear and intimidation but we were not.
Our belief was that if they did not work we would have learned something on the process anyway.
We are so grateful to everyone who assisted in the acquisition of these machines. There is no doubt that the enormous amount of money spent is justified. This workshop will serve as a compass that will shape the destiny of this institution.
